Journalism is __________
I don’t know why I’ve found myself in this current situation. It’s not that I don’t know about the importance of impartial reporting, or how the news industry works. It’s just that I don’t have much of a formal background in communications/media. It seems like if you want to be taken serious in any profession you need to have seriously studied it at some point.
My own background is in film studies, which for what it’s worth gives me the ability to get really bored in a conversation about movies with someone who just learned about a film technique the industry has been using since the dawn of the format (“I’m all about the Kuleshov Effect”). This isn’t to say I wasted my 4.5 years of college on a dying art form but I’m currently struggling to cross over into a media that I was not prepared to understand. My only hope is that the two industries lend more to each other than one would casually observe on a surface level assessment.
